Basta Kucha
Open all year

This old beautiful 18th century house is situated on 2000 m2 of private land with a beautiful walled garden. It is found in the village of Bast above the coastal resort of Baska Voda in middle Dalmatia. The coastal region here is known as the Makarska Riviera and the property is only 4 km from the sea and 10 km from the beautiful town of Makarska. It is 70 km from the Split airport at Trogir and only 60 km from the city of Split which has many Roman remains, including the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, which is now the dwellings for over 1.5 thousand people.

The guest rooms

The whole of the house has been renovated to a very high standard and furnished with 17th and 18th century antique furniture. All of the original architectural pieces of interest, such as beams and stonework, have been restored and incorporated into the building. We have four bedrooms, two with double beds, one with a double and a single bed and one with a single bed. Two of the rooms are on the first floor and two are on the second floor. The accommodation is ideal for a family. All rooms have en suite showers and WC. There is also, exclusively for our guests, a dining/sitting room with large 18th century chestnut refectory table to seat 10 people, and a comfortable sofa with chairs. Satellite television and a Hi-Fi are also available.

Guests have their own private entrance area that leads to a reception area for their sole use, which has coffee and tea facilities, a fridge and a microwave. Outside, there is a terraced area by a pond in the walled garden with garden furniture and a barbecue. Meals are served there in spring and summer. We also have a very friendly dalmatian named Basta and a farmyard cat called Goran. Our aim this year is also to get some sheep, chickens and ducks.

Activities

Our local town of Baska Voda (4 kms), is a friendly inviting resort which has all the conveniences, such as supermarkets, bakers, butchers, banks, cash dispensers, lots of bars, some really good value restaurants and many other holiday facilities. Makarska (10 minutes), a big version of Baska Voda, is a beautiful fishing port not unlike St. Tropez with a lovely sea front promenade lined with palm trees where you can buy fish directly from the fishing boats as they come in. Makarska centre has lots of cobbled streets where you will find a lot of big name shops as well very inviting restaurants. Split (60 kms) is a large bustling city with a wealth of ancient Venetian and Roman architecture. Its centre also has lots of narrow streets where you'll find all the high street names, including Top Shop and Selfridges! There's an Armeni's too!

There are many reasonably priced restaurants around us, where you can try some local dishes along with a glass of Croatian beer, wine or Schnapps. The magnificent mountain landscape of Biokovo (over a mile high!) is rich in fauna and flora, including wild sage and thyme, and is also a haven for ramblers, mountain-bikers and of course, rock climbers. On the coast there are many activities which could interest you, some with professionally run centres, including scuba diving, fishing (big-game fishing for shark and tuna!) and sailing. There are mini cruises organised if you want to look around the islands and you can also hire your own small boat in Baska Voda, or you could just settle for bathing in the sea, the beach is only 4 km away.

Further afield the magnificent town of Dubrovnik, an ancient and un-spoilt town, is only 2 hr's drive into southern Dalmatia. Korcula, another ancient walled town, is about half the distance to Dubrovnik. Trogir , a smaller version of Dubrovnik, is towards the north about 15 minutes from Split. Inland you can find the the Cetina river set in beautiful deep gorges which offers quality trout fishing or canoeing. It's well worth a visit just to see. Along the river there are many centres which offer canoeing expeditions and in the lower regions of the valley there are quite a few equitation centres.
