Suggested itinerary for cruise including Venice

FROM ANCIENT DUBROVNIK, Lord Byron's "pearl of the Adriatic," we set out to explore the spectacular world of the Dalmatian Coast, with its romantic Renaissance towns and enchanting villages perched above the shimmering blue Mediterranean. We explore fantastic settings including Korcula Island, Marco Polo's birthplace, where the fortified Old Town juts dramatically out into the sea, and medieval Hvar, with its ancient stone houses and lovely harbor full of fishing boats. A "Gulet", a traditional built wooden boat unique to this part of the Mediterranean, is the perfect vessel for exploring this intriguing coast. Along the way, we soak up the richly layered culture of this sunny stretch of the Mediterranean, with its 2,500-year history shaped by Illyrians, Romans, Venetians, Byzantines, and Slavs. Our journey ends with a flourish in Venice, beloved city of merchant princes and master painters.

Below is only one of our itineraries. Please see our other itineraries for one or two week cruises departing from Dubrovnik or Split.

Suggested Itinerary-in-Brief

Days 1-2
Dubrovnik

The entire walled city of Dubrovnik is a World Heritage monument. We roam the narrow lanes of its walled center, enjoying the city's famed mix of European sophistication and medieval art treasures.

Days 3-5
Korcula Island / Hvar Island

We embark from Dubrovnik and navigate among beautiful fjords en route to Korcula Island. The little town of Korcula, whose lofty limestone spires and domes are set against a backdrop of brilliant green hills, is one of the most dramatic medieval settings in all of eastern Europe. In the evening we head to the old square to see a Moreska performance, the spirited outdoor sword-fighting dance that is a four-century-old tradition on this island. The next day, we depart for Hvar Island, with its jagged green bays and turquoise seas, and take a walk around Hvar Town, a small, charming port of pretty promenades and quiet medieval back streets.

Days 6-9
Split / Sibenik / Losinj / Rab / Cres / Porec

At Split, we visit the well-preserved 3rd century ruins of Roman Emperor Diocletian's palace, then explore the lanes of the Renaissance-era town of Sibenik. We navigate among the remote islets of the Kornati Archipelago, swim in a secluded cove, then hike up Mt. Kameniak on medieval Rab Island for views of the snow-capped Velebit Mountains. We anchor overnight in the old fishing harbor at Cres Island. Cres and Losinj, really a single island split by a narrow channel, were in legend the place from which Jason and the Argonauts fled with the Golden Fleece. At Porec Island, we explore its elegant palaces as well as the exquisite 6th century Byzantine Basilica of Euphrasius, a World Heritage Site with jewel-encrusted mosaics.

Days 10-11
Venice, Italy

We disembark on Day 10 in Umag Harbor for a ferry ride into Venice to spend the night at this splendid city, luminously afloat at the edge of the sea. We depart from Venice on Day 11. (Please note, the ferry fare from Umag and the costs of staying in a hotel Venice are not included in the cruise price)

Days 11-14
Return to Dubrovnik

Return voyage to Dubrovnik, stopping off at locations of your choice - perhaps places you had particularly liked on the outward bound journey of the cruise!
